December 29th was a very special day here at Upcycles, as we helped a gentleman by the name of Steven recover his bicycle, which was stolen in June. He had long given up on the search, but the bike - through a series of strange and utterly fascinating events which I won't mention - ended up in our shop. A couple of weeks before a friend of mine, another bike aficionado, upon seeing the brown single-speed frame hanging on the wall, right away knew who the bike had belonged to. So, numbers were exchanged, appropriate conversations were had, and within a few days this all-to-rare Portland story had come to an happy end. Steven's smile says it all:
Needless to say, here at Upcycles we abhor bike theft and all of our used bicycles obtain approval from the Portland Police Department. If you have a bike you really care about, a quality bike lock - we stock several types of Kryptonite locks - is the best insurance against theft. We also strongly recommend keeping your bike's serial number on file, to make recovery of the bike easier, if it does get stolen. Here is a guide on how to locate it.
Our lucky Steven is the proprietor of Monkey Wrench Vegan Bakery, and delivers his "HUGE vegan cookies" all over town by bicycle.
P.S. I am at the shop, blasting Led Zeppelin III, about to have my second cup of coffee, it's late December and the sun is shining bright on our yellow A-frame sign! In other words, life is good, and I have a distinct feeling that it's going to get even better next year...
